From Panomics To Translational Precision Biotechnology
Our research group focuses on the molecular exploration and crop improvement of tropical plants through functional genomics. These include study on the effect of MeJA elicitation on the metabolome and transcriptome of Polygonum minus, genome survey of Garcinia mangostana, RNA-seq time-course analysis of mangosteen fruit development and seed germination, profiling of protein and metabolite compositions in Nepenthes pitchers and Mitragyna speciosa through panomics of integrated transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics with bioinformatics.
We also conduct polyploid tissue culture to expand the germplasm of local papaya varieties for selection and further breeding. Furthermore, we embark on transgenic biotechnology using in vitro techniques for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of papaya and rice to engineer desired traits, such as improved phytonutrient and stress resistance. Model plant Arabidopsis is employed as a molecular tool for functional analysis of genes and genome editing.
Apart from molecular biology, we apply analytical chemistry, such as FTIR, HPLC, GC-MS, and LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS for sample analysis. The aim of our work is to understand plant molecular physiology and development at systems biology level for applied knowledge in biomolecule discovery and improving crop via precision biotechnology for the benefits of society.
